Maurizio Zamparini was born in Palmanova (Udine) in 1941.
He left his homeland of Friuli in 1962 and moved to Lombardy, in the province of Varese, where he opened his own company producing exhaust systems for cars and heaters.
In 1972 in Vergiate he founded the "Mercatone", one of the first large-scale retail outlets in Italy: the "emmezeta" brand became famous throughout Italy. New stores in Palmanova, Tortona, Ancona, Rieti and Pordenone were opened in quick succession. The total number of stores soon reached 20 in both Italy and Croatia. In 2009, Zamparini sold his retail chain to the French giant "Conforama" (part of the Pinault Printemps Redoute Group).
